Young Concerto Competition Winners from Kaufman Music Center's Schools Thrill
Audiences with Their Incredible Technique and Musicianship

I want to share with you a unique and amazing concert that I filmed recently in Merkin Concert Hall. Seven young virtuosos from Kaufman Music Center's Lucy Moses School, Special Music School and Young Artist Program performed concertos by Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Weber and Spohr, plus a world premiere by Nikolai Rakov. The performances were filmed in 4K Ultra HD, and you can watch them on YouTube using HDTVs or 4K Ultra HDTVs. The following is a brief description of Kaufman Music Center and its affiliated schools.

Kaufman Music Center, located in New York City, features a prestigious concert hall called Merkin Concert Hall. The hall offers a large, bright stage with excellent acoustics. The hall presents some of the best artists in the classical world as well as musical theater performances, featuring Broadway's top professionals. Some of the series presented in the Hall include Broadway Close Up, Tuesday Matinees, the Ecstatic Music Festival, Broadway Playhouse, New York Festival of Song and New Sounds Live. The hall is available for artists and ensembles to rent.

In addition to the hall, the Center is also host to Lucy Moses School and Special Music School. Lucy Moses School is New York's largest community music school, offering classes in music, dance and theater to students of all ages. The school offers a combination of student care, community spirit and music-related dance and theater programs.

Special Music School is New York's only K-12 school that teaches music as a core subject. The school is a groundbreaking public school for musically gifted children offering musical training, including private instrumental lessons during the regular school day. The school combines intensive instrumental study with a rigorous academic program, providing a strong foundation for a lifetime of music without compromising academic studies. Modeled on the renowned special music schools of the former Soviet Union, Special Music School at Kaufman Music Center successfully ensures that music is a primary component of each child's education.

Both schools offer superior training, featuring over 150+ faculty members as well as music curricula. Click here to learn more about Kaufman Music Center.

Lower Your Cost and Risk When Creating a Video, DVD, and Blu‑ray Disc

Previously, when I filmed artists and produced CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray Discs (view examples), I offered a bundle that included the following services:

  1. A recommended recording location
  2. A video and audio recording of the artist's performance
  3. Design and post production services necessary to produce a CD, DVD or a Blu-ray Disc
  4. CD, DVD and Blu-ray Disc commercial replication

Now, however, using my new, multi-step process, the artist can commit to one step at a time and move to the next step(s) at his own pace or choose not to continue. The following is a short list of the steps and the value that each step offers to the artist:

Step 1 - Filming and Audio Recording

Using 4K Ultra HD cameras and my audio recording equipment, I film the performance while simultaneously recording the audio. If necessary, I also work with the artist to film (and audio record) corrections of any mistakes after the performance.

Deliverables and Benefits:
  • At the conclusion of the recording session, I provide the artist with the raw (non-edited) footage and audio files.
  • If the recording session does not require corrections of any mistakes and was filmed with a single camera, the artist (or I) can upload the video footage as is to YouTube or to his website. Later on, he can create a DVD or Blu-ray Disc.
  • If the artist does not want to create a DVD or a Blu-ray Disc, he can upload the recorded audio to his website or create a CD instead.
  • Allowing the artist to keep the video footage saves him time if on some future date he chooses to create a CD, DVD or Blu-ray Disc, because he already has the footage in his possession. Without it, the artist might have to re-record the entire performance from scratch, requiring that he learn and practice the music pieces on which he may have since gotten rusty.

Step 2 - Video and Audio Editing

In this step, I combine the footage from all cameras and synchronize the audio recording with the camera angles. I edit the video and the audio according to an artist-provided editing list, or with the artist in my studio in person.

Deliverables and Benefits:
  • I publish the entire program to YouTube (with the artist’s permission) and deliver the edited footage to the artist on an external hard drive that he supplies. Many artists embed the YouTube video on their websites and use it to promote their careers.
  • Having the final, edited video on YouTube allows the artist to promote his performance and read comments from viewers. Such viewer comments will help the artist to decide if he wants to create, or possibly mass produce, a CD, DVD or Blu-ray Disc.

Step 3 - CD, DVD and Blu-ray Disc Authoring and Duplication

Using the edited footage, I can create a CD for artists who wish to release just an audio record. For artists interested in releasing a video, I can author a DVD and/or Blu-ray Disc, with an artist’s choice of either a menu with a simple Play button, or feature chapter menus which allows a viewer to select a specific piece on the disc. More information about DVD/Blu-ray Disc authoring can be found here: http://asafblasberg.com/DVD-Blu-ray-authoring.aspx.

Once the disc is finalized, I can create a small amount (up to ten) of CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray Discs at an affordable price.

Deliverables and Benefits:
  • To reduce cost, the discs are generally delivered in a plain sleeve with a text label on the disc. Artwork can be added upon the artist’s request. The artist can forward a handful of these high quality CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray Discs to professional musicians for feedback, to determine whether he wishes to replicate his product in mass quantities.

Step 4 - CD, DVD and Blu-ray Disc Replication

I work with an external vendor who creates industrial-grade copies (1,000 or more) of CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray Discs. This is the final stage of production.

Deliverables and Benefits:
  • One thousand copies is the lowest economical quantity for replication. In many cases, it is advantageous to replicate DVDs and Blu-ray Discs together as a single package.
  • Now the artist can mail the professionally made discs to various music publications for reviews, sell them on Amazon and other stores, or distribute them to attendees of future performances.
