I am excited to share with you an astounding video recording of Jerome Rose's recent performance of Rachmaninov's Second Piano Sonata
in B-flat minor, Op. 36. Jerome Rose, a renowned pianist, teacher, and the founder of the International Keyboard Institute and Festival in New York City, is well known
for his interpretation of the romantic period piano literature, and his performance of Rachmaninov's masterpiece is no exception.
Mr. Rose was generous enough to post the entire performance on YouTube, which I
highly recommend you watch. If you're interested, you can find a detailed review of the performance on the
Classical Music Daily website.
In the introduction to the recording, Mr. Rose provides interesting insights into the composition's history, stating that Rachmaninov began the work in Rome in 1911 and revised it extensively in 1931. He describes the piece as a mature work, written at the height of Rachmaninov's powers, filled with imagination, harmonic development, thematic development, motivic development, and counterpoint. He regards it as one of Rachmaninov's greatest pieces and is proud to perform it during the 150th anniversary of the composer's birth.
To faithfully capture Mr. Rose's interpretation of the music, I used three cameras and a pair of studio-quality microphones, ensuring that the recording truly does justice to the performance.
Thank you for taking the time to read about this exceptional performance, and I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed recording it.
